A Simple Idea & My Fav Comb

Such a simple idea - A brilliant idea - Drop your shampooed, long, wet hair inside a 100% cotton pillow case, twist, stand up and tuck it into the back. Why didn't I think of that!?!

It is so much easier to use than a towel or a turban 'cause all of your hair will fit. I bought a couple online from Dharma Trading Company. They sell 100% cotton pillow cases that don't have a finish on them - just pure cotton and cotton stitching. I understand that a cotton pillow case or a cotton t-shirt is the best thing to wrap your hair up in after you shampoo it.

I like the pillow case 'cause all you have to do is drop in your hair and it touches nothing else. Neither the cotton pillow case or the cotton t-shirt will sap all the needed moisture out of your hair like a bath towel or twisty turbun will. The end result is that your hair will then be much softer when combed and left to dry naturally.

And, this is my most favorite comb - Hairsense Seamless Bone Comb: Volume - 2 1/2" x 7". I've been using it for about a year now. I always grab for it first to hit any tangles that I might have in my wet or dry hair. Plus, it is great to use if you fight static in your hair like I do in the Winter.. I use it and now have no static to deal with.

The two hair forks (wood and plastic) I purchased on-line really cheap and decorated each up with jewelry findings embellishments and E6000 glue.

Backtracking To Christmas

I started working on this vintage Christmas wreath when I separated out the decorations for it while trimming our Christmas tree last month.

But, I never got back to actually making it until after Christmas as I had to find a wreath first. I completed it tonight. It really looks better in person. Then, you can really see the bright colors, the depth of the wreath and the glitter.

It has decorations that my daughter and I made when she was little, some I bought way back then, a couple (pink gingerbread boy and girl) from Avon back when I was selling it and a few I bought in recent years. The big elf doll I bought on clearance this year at Hobby Lobby and added buttons to his jacket and bells on his toes. And, the one elf dressed all in blue is a really old vintage decoration.

I hope my daughter likes it as I made it with her and my grandsons in mind. She will be getting it eventually.

Decorating For Valentine's Day

A lost, then found, little fiber optic Christmas tree found in the basement has now become my holiday tree that I will decorate for different holidays as the year moves forward. At night it is is so pretty and cheerful...

This year I would have loved to make decorations, but in an effort to save time to do/make other things I spent only 97 cents at Walmart for some super glittered confettii; found some tape and some ribbon and made some quick ones.

Also, I've always wanted to make a garland for the fireplace so I did this year for Valentine's Day using simply ribbon, tiny, tiny clothespins and store bought Valentines. So simple, yet effective...

Maybe I'll make something out of fabric to hang there after Valentine's Day is over. Plus, I have some really cute Easter fabric I could use to make a "flag" garland to hang there.

Long Hair After 50.

On May 1, 2010 I decided to start my long hair journey, layered hair and all, with the longest layer being 27-6/8". I want to see how long I can get it, with it looking good and healthy by the time I reach age 60.

It's been a slow go growing out the layers to achieve an all one length goal. For the most part, I'm there except for the layer of grown out bangs. Now I need to work on thickening the ends.

Currently my hair is between 32" and 33" - waist length on me. In the past, soon to be 2 years, I've cut an inch or two off here and there to get to all one length. Once I took a quiz to see what my growth potential is - the result was 39".

Currently at age 57-1/2 years old, we'll see...

25 Plus Things I Know Now For Sure While On My Long Hair Journey.

1. 1/4 cup of white vinegar in 1 cup of warm water is the best final rinse you can use to make your hair shine, adjust your PH and to prevent build-up in your hair.

2. Mixing some honey in your palm with your conditioner will make your hair super soft because it's a humidant, but it will over time lighten your hair. In most cases, the result is pretty though.

3. Using a water softener on your shower head is a must if you live in an area with really hard water that contains lots of chemicals. The result could be hair breakage if you don't.

4. Fine hair seems to hold best in a bun using forks instead of sticks.

5. Any hair ornament that isn't smooth will over time cut/break your hair leaving you with short wisps of hair.

6. Time is your friend when you're growing your hair to a super length so make it your best friend of which you have huge patience with.

7. My most favorite way to "shampoo" my hair currently is wet it completely, put conditioner on length and esp on the ends of my hair and use the shampoo only on the scalp - Rinse and condition again waiting the required time before rinsing it out of your hair.

8. Using a silk/satin pillowcase is a must if you sleep without a silk/satin sleep cap if you don't want your hair to be a mess in the morning with tangles which only pull your hair out. Ideally, using a pillowcase and a sleep cap is best. Your face could benefit too.

9. Quality over Quantity, ie. Length is your best route.

10. The only cure for layers is time and patience and more frequent trims to achieve all one length.

11. A healthy diet, lifestyle (exercise), vitamins and drinking plenty of water will grow hair.

12. Hair DOES grow faster in the summer months vs. the winter months.

13. Working some jojoba oil into the length of your dried hair and then brushing it in with a bristle boar brush keeps it healthy.

14. If need be, washing your hair every day, every other day or whatever is not bad for your hair and doesn't make it fall out. Sweat needs to be washed out of it and off your scalp or you could develop an itchy scalp condition.

15. A sock bun is not cheating - A bun is a bun is a bun.

16. My favorite long hair style is and probably always will be a cinnamon bun.

17. Going to bed wearing a braid, a ponytail, pigtails or my hair just flowing freely doesn't work for me. Even a bun now and then doesn't either because of the poking pins or the pull on my scalp leaving sore spots on my scalp.

18. If I can keep it on and I don't get hot, a sleep cap works best for me giving my hair a break from wearing it in a bun all day and keeps it from getting tangled.

19. Fine hair will tangle in the slightest breeze.

20. Fine hair is like delicate silk and is the hardest to grow long.

21. I never thought I'd say this, but letting my hair dry naturally using no hair dryer is working for me.

22. Aloe Vera Gel has been a great remedy for taming my fly aways and "healing" them when I pull my hair straight back.

23. Once I quit coloring/highlighting my hair, I found that I really like my natural white hair streak that starts behind my right ear and shows when I wear my hair up, and it's getting wider with some other white hairs sprinkled here and there.

24. I don't care if others think my long hair and/or my white hairs sprinkled here and there makes me look older. They think it does, I do not. Who are they trying to kid with their short cuts and dyed hair?

25. Cutting my own hair and not coloring or highlighting it anymore at a salon saves me SO much money. Money that I can spend on other things.

26. Having long hair makes me feel more feminine and since not many at my age have it, it also makes me feel somewhat special - Not better, just somewhat special.

An Early Christmas Surprise

Hubby took me to the mall a few days before Christmas so that I could visit Kay Jewelers and get free batteries for 2 of my best watches.

It's a special plan that I bought over 5 years ago. For the life of these 2 watches I can get free batteries for them. I didn't even buy the watches there! I expect when they advertised the special they figured most would lose their receipt and/or their watch would just quit working. ;o)

While we were waiting at the counter I saw hubby go pick up a sales flyer, and asked me if I would like one of these necklaces - Open Hearts by Jane Seymour "If your heart is open, love will always find its way in."

We walked out with me getting this for Christmas! My birthstone is a ruby so this one is perfect. He picked this pendant out as his favorite. I was just looking at and considering the smallest, 2 heart pendant that they had for sale.

Fun, New Hair Toys

HERE is where I found my new hair toy set below made out of upcycled kitchen forks. I love this set - joy and sorrow.

On a side note, it's the first week of November and my hair now measures 31 inches after a couple of trims. I've lost nearly 2 inches in length, but almost all the layers have now grown out. Yay...now maybe I can stop trimming the ends for awhile and make some length progress.

Super Easy Monkey Bread

I've been wanting to make some Monkey Bread for awhile now so when I saw Paula on The Talk on Halloween giving out her recipe, I decided to make it for our Halloween.

Paula Deen's Monkey Bread

3-12 oz cans of refrig. biscuits (I used Pillsbury Grands jr - Golden Homestyle Buttermilk) 10 to a can.
1/2 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 stick of butter (8 T)
1 cup packed light brown sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Grease a large bundt pan.
3. Mix in a bowl - 1/2 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons (or to your liking) of cinnamon.
4. Cut each biscuit into 4ths and roll each in the sugar/cinnamon mixture and drop into greased pan.
5. Melt 1 stick of butter (I used Blue Bonnet stick) and mix it well with 1 cup packed light brown sugar.
6. Pour mixture evenly over the arranged, rolled biscuit 4ths.
7. Bake for about 45 to 55 min. Mine was done a little before 45 min.
8. Remove from oven and cool in pan for only 5 min. and then invert while hot onto a plate.

Next time, for just hubby and me, I'm cutting the recipe in half.

It's Been A While...

October was filled with both good things and bad things. Both of which have kept me away from blogging.

First the good things...

My daughter invited me to visit her for a few days. We got to go see the new Footloose movie together and then that night watched the original. That was great fun. We also spent a lot of that time playing around with stained glass and glass fusing. Her Etsy shop owned along with her hubby is Wood And Glass.

With her help, I designed and made a few pendants (which a few will be in My Shop soon) and also tried my hand at making a fused wall vase using my original drawing of a bleeding heart fairy and using her perfected technique for making them. I was also gifted one made by her. One small area next to the bed in "my room" was lined with all the wall vases she'd made so far for me to pick one to take home. All were filled with water and fresh flowers and a vase beside the bed was filled too. It was a wonderful, thoughtful surprise.

I also had a wonderful time getting together with my 2 grandsons. And, the first day, I got to enjoy breakfast together with she, her hubby and the 2 kids during their usual morning routine. My daughter and I along with the youngest (who just turned one in Sept.) got to enjoy him playing in the kids' center at a nearby mall. It was fun to watch him interacting with all the other kids. We also got in some shopping and I came home with a microwave kiln I purchased for 40% off at Hobby Lobby and some gifted and rounded up glass fusing items to use with it from my daughter. Three of the pendants in the pic were made with it - The two that are red with a single yellow flower in the middle and the one with a white flower.

And now the bad things...

I had been experiencing back spasms the day I left on my little trip and continued to suffer to a mild degree while I was visiting. Then, I came home to hubby who was limping around on a badly hurting and swelled knee. Then, my back spasms got worse to the degree I could hardly walk along with a sore throat, then a cold and then had to visit a walk-in clinic 'cause I'd developed bacterial bronchitis which I'm still in the process of completely getting over. There was a day there where both hubby and I needed someone to wait on us, but we survived through it. Now, my bad spasms are all gone (thankfully, they were gone before I got really sick). I'm getting over my bronchitis and hubby's knee has been treated and is doing good. So, the month is ending on a good note.

Wedding Anniversary Soon

Has it really been that long? - Where did the time go? - It kinda seems like yesterday...And then it kinda doesn't... lol...

Next month will be hubby's and my wedding anniversary - 17 years!

As with most marriages we've weathered some pretty bad storms, but we did it together. He still makes me laugh, and we still have fun together. I think that's quite a good thing to say after 17 years.

The 17th wedding anniversary is a day to celebrate a past filled with accomplishments and commitment. It is a day to look ahead to all that a future may hold.

Furniture is the singular association for a 17th anniversary gift. Where it would be thrilling to purchase a new dining room set, a new bedroom set or even a plasma television, these large-scale purchases may not be an option. If you feel strongly about adhering to an anniversary gift list, but do not want a large purchase, just scale it down. Furniture doesn't have to mean a new couch or desk. It can be something as small as a plant stand or trinket to enhance existing furniture.

I think the huge Victorian framed picture that we found at our local Salvation Army fits the bill to a tee!

My Great Find

Hubby and I had some electronic items to drop off at Salvation Army Sat. and look what I saw for sale in the window of the store! I immediately had to have it if the price was right.

It's a huge, very elegantly, framed print and cost me only $20. It measures 34" wide x 29" high. Originally, I think it cost somewhere around $100 new. At least that's my best guess in researching the company printed on the back of the picture which is The Bombay Co, Inc. which was established in 1950. Hubby paid for it and loaded it into the truck while I checked to see it I could find anything else - but didn't.

I have a few places to repair/repaint on the frame itself which has been nicked in a few spots. The frame is not wood so any significant bump will knock off a bit of the frame design. But, all in all, I think it was a great find.

This Year's Garden

We really don't have a garden anymore this year after all the rain we had early on and then the 3 diget temps last month.

The 5 Hungarian Sweet Peppers I planted were the only plants that produced much of anything.

I got only 1 yellow squash before the few plants that we had either died or were almost dead so I yanked them. Our tomato plants really took off after all the rain quit, but then it got so hot (which I never knew it could be too hot for tomatoes) the tomato were just stunted. We have tomatoes, but small and they won't ripen.

I'm not sure I'm even going to bother next year. I really feel for farmers.

SHE'S HERE! My Girl is here...

She made it all the way here from Japan in only 3 days.

Of course I guess she should with shipping costing $31.00. I know...yikes. And, I had to sign for her (I was never notified about that!) which luckily worked out when normally I wouldn't even have seen or heard the mailman. It was just pure luck or I would have probably had to wait until Monday or Tuesday to go pick her up at the post office.

Apparently, one HAS to take pics of the delivery and unwrapping/unpacking of the doll especially if it's your first one. But, I doubt I'll ever get another Blythe since they aren't exactly cheap. But, I'm sure I'll want one... So anyway, I documented the event in pics (without asking the mailman for his pic...*grin*), but I haven't even been to bed yet and it's past 2:00 in the afternoon so those pics will have to wait until another time.

The only thing that I found not to my liking which is really nothing is that her pet Chihuahua's leash won't go over his head. It's no problem to make another one though as it's just ribbon.

I bought him a dog crate anyway 'cause I saw one in a doll set at The Dollar Store that works great - and only a $1.00.

She's On Her Way From Japan

My Neo Blythe Simply Mango and her little pet chihuahua are on their way to the USA to live at my house with me and my chihuahua. I haven't figured out what I want to name her yet - Or, what to name her pet chihuahua.

For the longest time (a year or so) I've been researching Blythe dolls and dreaming of owning one (the 12" one), but the cost just put me off - UNTIL - this week when I saw this little cutie with her pet Chi. I have to say it was the chihuahua that sold me, but she's pretty cute too with her groovy orange hair. When I told hubby, he said, "Well of course you did..." :o)

I gathered from all of my research she's a very good investment - so - she's my gift to myself for my birthday which is July 5th. I think it's just so cool how you can change the color and position of her eyes to several different colors/several different looks - a very unique doll.

Right now I'm creating and hand sewing some hats for the Littlest Pet Shop Blythes that have been for sale in the USA since last year. They each also have pets. These dolls are SO tiny, only 4-1/2" tall. I have one set of hats done though and designs and plans for others.

Sally's Beauty Supply

I guess I just paid $2.50 for an age compliment.

Last night I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and upon checking out I was asked if I'd like to join their beauty club. After hearing the reduced cost of $2.50 vs. the $5.00 regular membership if one is 55 or older, I said, "Sure, it'll only cost me $2.50. When I got to the car and looked at my receipt, I'd been charged $5.00 instead of the reduced fee of $2.50 for being 55 or older. I let it go as I received a $5 coupon to use in the store at the end of my cash register receipt and will correct them at the end of a year when it expires.

Home Depot

Home Depot was supposed to deliver and install our new dishwasher on the 29th. They delivered it, but then told us they couldn't install it because the water shut-off valve that is just for the dishwasher was not right next to it - on the same level. Ours is just at the bottom of the basement steps which is right off our kitchen. The plumber redid it so it would make it EASIER for them to do the installation compared to what the past owners had done. So, NOW we have to call the plumber back and pay even more money to get the @&^%* thing installed. This "little" project is going to cost a fortune before it's over. The dishwasher was only $300. It's not like there was never one there - there was. The guy from Home Depot said where we have the shut-off valve isn't wrong it's just against their policy on what is required for them to install the dishwasher. I told him then I bet nearly all the installations that are scheduled for them never happen, and he said it was about 50/50. I bet it's higher than that. Home Depot hires another company to do their installations with Home Depot regulations/rules. Another crappy thing which is mostly why we had to have the plumber come to the house in the first place is that Home Depot will cart away your old dishwasher free if and only if it's already unhooked and taken out.

In hindsight, I should have just had the dishwasher delivered and had the plumber out once to do ALL the work. This will be the third time he's been here for this project.

Christmas Cookies & Kitchen Chaos

Compared to the decorated Christmas cookies I've made in the past, this year's are a bit sorry looking. But, hubby will think they're beautiful and will gladly eat them, and that's all that really matters anyway.

We're getting a new dishwasher that will be installed the Wed. after Christmas, and I have stuff sitting everywhere that came from under the kitchen sink that I had to remove for the plumber to take out our garbage disposal that stopped working, redo the plumbing there, and take out our old built-in dishwasher that's now sitting on the patio waiting to be hauled away when the new one comes. Hubby thought I was kidding when I said that I was the plumber's right hand man until I told him all the stuff I helped with. Then, add the fact that I started to rearrange a corner cabinet on a whim the same day and never finished it and now that stuff is also sitting to be gone through, purged and rearranged.

Actually, if you'd see my kitchen you'd be amazed I was even able to produce these Christmas cookies...lol I just hope the new dishwasher is worth all of this trouble AND cost. I had gotten used to doing dishes by hand when I decided a couple of years ago that the 30 year old dishwasher that came with the house wasn't doing all that great of a job unless I practically washed them first myself so I just stopped using it. Now, it doesn't work at all. I found a good deal for a new one on-line on Cyber Monday so I decided to replace it. I hate having something around that doesn't serve a purpose anymore or work anymore just taking up space. I just never knew it would be such an involved and costly project.

Cookie Baking Tip - Using parchment paper on your cookie sheets makes baking cookies a hundred times easier and more successful. I didn't become a great cookie baker until I discovered it.

Some Pearls, Needle & Thread

I saw this idea of sewing pearls into the center of a silk poinsettia to use as a hair accessory and wanted to give it a try.

I cut the plastic center out piece by piece and just used a thin needle and thread to sew the pearls on. Then, I hot glued the silk leaf circle to the underside of the flower, trimmed a bit of the plastic away that pops it onto the stem and hot glued it to a small, metal hair comb I bought at Hobby Lobby. I thought it turned out rather pretty and not cheap looking at all even though I bought the poinsettia bush at Dollar Tree.

Now, all I need is a Christmas party to go to, a fancy dress to wear and I'm set - Well, a girl can dream...Ya think I can pull it off just wearing it to the mall with hubby to look at all the Christmas decorations instead? If both women and men can wear a Santa's Hat shopping, I think yes...lol

A few days ago we broke open our new XBox 360 KINECT game system. I got it all hooked-up yesterday and hubby got to try it out for the first time last night.

Between games Motion Sports and Dance Central maybe I can finally drop the weight I've been wanting/needing to lose and in a fun way so I'll keep at it. For years, that didn't used to be a problem of mine - sticking to the daily routine of exercise, but for some reason it is now.

I ran across THIS YouTube video yesterday and decided to rid my closet of a couple of t-shirts I never wear, but still like. I did, however, cut out my sleeves and neck carefully and jazzed them both up a bit too. I also used a zig-zag stitch rather than a staight stitch. I doubt I'll use mine to haul groc. in. I plan on using mine to tote my junk from one place to another. That is except my library books. I'm sure they both would hold them as I stitched the bottom twice, but the books would probably stretch the totes all out of shape.

I just finished this Baby Tag Blankie for my new grandson due in September. It's a small blankie with a variety of colors, patterns, and textures for the eyes, touch and to play with.

I used a pattern from a Quick Cuts leaflet and Quick Cuts 5 piece Fat Quarter Flannel Bundle both purchased at Walmart. The various ribbon pieces came from my ribbon remnant jar.

I changed the pattern a bit - adding zig-zag decorative stitching accenting the patchwork front, 2 rows of top stitching around the whole piece for super baby safety holding all ribbons securely and a hang tag/grab and tote tag.

Oh, and I used bias tape and some craft thread to create a made by tag that I then machine stitched onto the blankie.

I always know a photo taken at my computer desk will come out looking great with the computer lamp that I use so excuse me for not creating/shooting in a more creative environment. I made this decorative hair pin/pick tonight watching TV. It was still lacking something so a couple of hours later I knew just what it needed. I glued one of my lovebirds' feathers and one of my cockatiel's feathers to it. I've been saving feathers from our parrots to make some earrings, but I just have never gotten around to making any.

Hubby and I have seats reserved for the movie Eclipse today - Sunday showing for a limited engagement at our IMAX theater at The Science Center. Maybe I'll wear it to that. You know, Team Jacob and all...

Sharing A Hair Tip

I'm in the process of growing my hair super long which also means growing out my layers and my bangs. Right now, my length is 28-1/4". How cool would it be if I could double that length in a few years or however long it takes. And...

I want to share a tip I tried today that seemed to work for those of us that around the third day experience some excess oiliness an inch or so into our hair from our scalp that spoils our look and we have no time to wash it. I'd tried this years ago and didn't like the results at all, but this time I used different products and did. For me, this doesn't work if you leave your hair down, but does if you're pulling it back into an updo. I got a lot of static in my hair and just used a bit of water on my hands as I slicked it back into my updo.

1. Baby powder doesn't work as well as pure corn starch.
2. A plain nylon brush doesn't work as well as a bristle boar brush (without nylon bristles mixed in).
3. And, the SECRET weapon is a fluffy, makeup brush that you would use to brush on finishing powder after you apply your foundation.

Divide the hair on the top of your head into sections and powder the oiliness with the corn starch and then brush it out with the BBB. Don't over brush though...Just enough to get the corn starch out. You'll see it on your BBB. I bought mine at Walgreens - Conair brand with a wooden base and a rubber handle.

This is also great to stretch out the days you shampoo a week for healthier hair. And for me, I don't have to always wear a cute, baseball cap on my third day to stretch out my shampoo days.

September - UPDATE: I'm back to washing my hair everyday or no later than every other day. For me, I've discovered that I lose more hair washing it less often when I do wash it vs. washing it everyday and hardly losing any hair in the process.

Under The Dome by Stephen King - Unabridged - This audio book alone has over 35 hours of listening...I only rarely like Stephen King, but this book seemed interesting and since it's SO big I KNEW I'd never get through it. It was 40% off which still made it $45.00 total with tax. I just hope I like it!!!.

Working On A New Look

I'm in the process of giving this blog a new look...I'm not sure yet what I want to do with it or how I'm going to accomplish it (or when I'm going to get around to doing it). I should probably make it a Winter project.

Valentine's Day Mini Neck Scarf

Remember this that I started by Bethany?

Well, I screwed-up the bind-off. There was nothing wrong with the pattern directions. I just didn't fully understand the bind-off used so mine wasn't as neat and pretty as it should have been. So, I decided to crochet the bad end to make it look better and just call it quits halfway through the pattern and make this mini neck scarf with white, heart buttons for Valentine's Day rather than a Winter Whimsy.

But, I do want to actually make a Winter Whimsy, but find a different bind-off that I can understand for the board. I did the bind-off for the cast-on end that used waste yarn just perfect. This isn't the first time I've had problems doing a bind-off. I cast-on and knit along perfectly and then screw-up at the end. For some reason, I just have problems understanding some directions for it. I can't follow what the pattern is saying or follow fine and then lose my place as to what I'm doing - thus messing it up. Maybe one of these days I'll have a light bulb moment, and it'll all make sense to me.

Sewing Jar Pincushion

I've been wanting to make one of these sewing jars for years.

I made this prototype tonight. I have a whole box of these canning jars that I think I bought to store homemade yogurt in, but never used them. I'm not sure I'll make anymore of these, but if I did, for my shop, I'd think of a better way to finish off the inside of the cap. I just popped in a circle of scrapbooking paperboard with the look of old lettering on it.

Sometimes I go wild with something and make many and other times I just make a prototype and keep it for myself and move on to something else. I'm not sure how others make them, but I cut a styrofoam ball in half to use as the pincushion top. I love hot glue...It makes crafting SO easy.

A 2nd Sewing Center

I created a little sewing corner in the living room using and old, small computer desk. I'm flowing out of the little bedroom I made into a crafting studio. My mom's old sewing machine is still in there. You can see it in my blog banner.

I just finished putting up a cafe curtain rod for the skirt I made that hides many a boxes behind it. I found the cotton fabric at Walmart a couple of years ago. It saying "Creative Woman" on it and has some really cute graphics. The desk has a little pull-out table under the sewing machine where the keyboard sat where I keep a sewing book or two and notes.

There's a pink KK knitting loom missing from the wall 'cause I'm using it right now to make this. Now, what do I do with all the wood knitting boards that I have...

Actually, it was ME that wanted the chocolate cupcakes. :o) He wanted Oatmeal Scotties - cookies (which I did make too). I told him to take the cookies to work with him and leave them in the car so they wouldn't be around here for me to snack on. :o)

I've found the secret to super moist cupcakes - Only use a cake mix that has pudding in it and don't over bake them. Hershey's chocolate frosting in a tub is wonderful too. It's the only one that I buy anymore.

I've been playing around with this Gator Neck Warmer pattern. So far I've made one Gator Neck Warmer, a couple of head/ear warmers, a wrist/arm warmer tube, and now this cowl neck warmer.

Start with a piece of fabric that measures 19" x 40" instead of the 20" x 20". Stitch it like the pattern (note stretch direction) and you get this cowl neck warmer (much more forgiving of your hair style) The neck warmer/scarf this size also has a lot of styling possibilities.

Start with the same 19" x 40" fabric piece and stitch it with the stretch running the opposite direction of the pattern and you have a wrist/arm warmer tube (a long open tube). I made hubby a wrist/arm warmer tube in the football pattern to use while watching TV. His hands always get cold. I need to take a pic of it too I guess. It matches his football pattern head/ear warmer.

I started out with 2 different fleece fabrics - 1/2 yard each - $2.44 for 1/2 yard and each made 2 items. I had NO waste... Not bad...

Loom Knit Set

To start the new year this is the set of wrist warmers/fingerless gloves and matching scarf that I made for my daughter. Wrist warmers are popular again because of the movie, "New Moon".

I started out making wrist warmers using an on-line pattern and then created my own pattern. But, this pair was made using that pattern making a few changes of my own along the way (ie. a smaller thumb hole and a longer length) and using a different size and brand of loom after looming a pair as per pattern directions.

Yarns used:

Wrist warmers - Red Heart Super Saver in the color 0360 Cafe (100% Acrylic - #4) held together as one with a discontinued yarn by Universal Yarn, Inc. called Twister Space in the color #26 (44% Polyamide, 34% Wool, 17% Acrylic, 5% Cotton - #5 Bulky).

Loom Used: "In The Attic" purple, flexible mitten loom (the larger of the set)

Scarf - Red Heart Super Saver in the color 0360 Cafe (100% Acrylic) held together as one with Bernat Softee Chunky in the color Natural (100% Acrylic - # 5 Bulky).

Loom Used: I used the same loom for the scarf as I did the wrist warmers minus 2 pegs I believe - flat panel loom knitting.

I was much happier with the wrist warmers than I was with the scarf. The next scarf I make will not be e-wrap a row and then purl a row. It took forever. I have yet to learn how to use the KK purple board and my other wood boards. I'd like to make my next scarf using one of them.

A Bit Of Sewing & Chatting

I did some sewing this weekend - simple projects for us and for one of my shops. It was a good way to get myself familiar with my new sewing machine. Learning how to thread the machine and the bobbin (and remembering it) are always a pain until you get it right. If it's not just right the machine won't work.

Some Gator Neck and head Warmers (one for me and two for hubby's B-day) from a pattern that started The Gator Project. The football print and winter print are a bit smaller and are for the head.

And, some cute tissue cozies - A new pattern for me that I reworked. I used some REALLY cute fabric inside and out.

On another note, I keep forgetting to fed my blog pet Ladybug. She HAS to be fed and watered at least once every 24 hours. One of these days FooPets.com is going to come get her if I don't get on the ball. Then, I'll have to pay to get her back - Seriously...

Chico visits the doggie spa (or dog groomer if you will) once a month for a bath, to have his nails clipped, ears cleaned as well as his teeth so... for Christmas I stitched-up these tissue cozies for the gals that work there. Isn't the fabric cute? I found it at Walmart. The one with the buttons ended-up as mine - a practice one to experiment with fit and sizing and then I made a few changes.

Survival Bracelet

Is this cool or what? I just learned how to make a survival bracelet.

I made it with a continuous 8 feet length of 550 paracord. If needed in an emergency, it can be cut and taken apart and you have 8 ft. of strong cord. I made this first one for hubby. It's probably a guy thing since I think guys mostly make them and wear them (but, usually not with a button), but I think they're pretty cool. The cobra knot wasn't quite as easy to master as I thought it would be. :oP The reverse side of the bracelet looks exactly like the top which also is pretty cool.

Today, I noticed at least one tomato forming on the large tomato plants. Some of the radishes are going to seed/blooming and the cucumber and squash plants are getting really big leaves.

Picked-up at a garage sale for $15 while visiting my daughter in KS. I found a pot for it and planted it with Pink Vinca and Lysimachia 'Aurea'. The worrying rabbit was in my garden until he got covered with plants. He does all the gardening worrying for me. :o)

Fairies & Water Gardens

Here's our water garden that I've been working on for 2 days now. Click on the pics for more detail.

Every year I try to set it up so visiting birds can drink out of it. And always there's the protective angel present.

Yesterday hubby scooped the rain water out of it so I could get it filled and set-up. It still needs a lot of clean-up work in the area around it, and I'd like to find some flat rocks to edge it so you can't see the black rim, but where in the world do you find them? That one flat rock that the potted plant sits on cost me $5 at Menards. That is just a ridiculous price. No way am I going to pay that kind of money to edge this mini pool. I told hubby I still can't believe that I spent $5 on a rock...lol He said, "Yeah, but it looks good there."

The mosaic fairy sign I made several years ago that says "Fairies Welcome", and I bought the little, painted, rock, fairy house from a gal at Etsy. I also found some little lanterns in the basement I bought awhile back that light the pool at night.

I have a Water Lily planted at the bottom of the pool (which I hope soon makes it way to the surface), and I also went to our local, nearby nursery and bought the floating Water Hyacinth plant. The outside clerk there said it would grow and spread wildly - maybe more than I'll want it to. I read on-line that one-day-long purple flowers may appear in summer - fingers crossed. While searching on-line I also saw where you can buy Fairy Moss. I'd like to have some of that too since I have a fairy house.

Last night I got everything caged and staked that I think I'm going to do this season. We are going to have tomatoes this year exploding everywhere. There's no way just the two of us can consume them all. But, it's nice to experiment with different varieties.

In recent weeks, hubby and I have been trying to get a small, veggie garden in, but the low temps and recent rains weren't helping. The newly, overturned plot is all weeded and ready (thanks to him) to plant, and I've got my plants ready to go so maybe we can get that done this Sat. It's going to be a nice day with no rain and really, really nice temps.

I found this REALLY COOL website - Chart Jungle - where you can print out all kinds of FREE charts and stuff. And, I also found there someGarden Plant Tags you can print, cut out, laminate and attach to stakes for your garden.

What I'm Working On Now

I kinda took a vacation from loom knitting for about a month because of my hand/fingers hurting. But,...

I'm now currently working on a set of coasters using a fine gauge loom and cotton yarn.

I've been watching a lot of video demonstrations lately on crochet and needle knitting that makes me want to get my knitting needles and crochet hooks out again and start a project for both.
